Study Reveals the Best Summer Staycation of 2021

With summer just around the corner, and lockdown restrictions easing, it is no surprise that OnBuy.com's outdoor recreation department found that the UK's Google trends average for 'staycations' has seen an 89% increase in the past month.

Eager to find out which cities in the UK are best for a summer staycation, HeatingForce.co.uk created an index-based point system taking into consideration various social and geographical factors. These factors include annual sunshine, annual rainfall, Airbnb prices, restaurant and ice cream shop ratings, alongside access to parks and outdoor activites.*

The 10 Best UK Cities For A Staycation:

Experts at HeatingForce.co.uk can confirm that Norwich is the best UK city for a staycation with a total score of 329 out of 500. Scoring among the highest for average hours of sunshine (1,611 hours a year) and average restaurant ratings (4.7 out of 5), Norwich is perfect for those looking for a real holiday feel.

Ranking second is Cambridge with a score of 319 out of 500. Those holidaying in Cambridge can enjoy plenty of parks (153) and outdoor activities (33), with a likelihood of minimal rain as this city boasts the lowest annual rainfall average (568 mm). However, dragged down by restaurant and ice cream shop ratings, at 4.5 out of 5 and 3.8 out of 5, respectively, Cambridge might not be the first choice for food lovers.

Oxford is the third best city for a UK staycation with a score of 307. Known for its beauty, Oxford ranks among the highest for average annual hours of sunshine (1,578 hours) and ice cream shop ratings (4.1 out of 5).

Following closely behind is Southampton (289), Bristol (269) and Peterborough (263) all receiving a score of over 250 out of 500, respectively ranking fourth, fifth and sixth.

The 10 Worst UK Cities For A Staycation:

St Asaph stands as the worst UK city for a staycation with a score of - 66 out of 500 -120% lower than Norwich.  Ranking joint lowest for outdoor activities (0) and parks (0), this city is not ideal for those looking for an active staycation.

Armagh ranks as the second worst city break with a score of -25. Armagh has one of the least hours of annual sunshine (1,246 hours) and ranks low across all analysed leisure activities – both of these are key factors to consider when booking a summer retreat.

Armagh is followed by the City of Salford with a score of -15 out of 500; primarily ranking low due to having one of the least hours of annual sunshine (1,212 hours) and highest amount of yearly rainfall (1,118mm).

Bangor (-14) and Wakefield (0) are among the UK cities scoring under 1 point, respectively ranking fourth and fifth.
